Illustrations by Hugh D’Andrade

Hugh D’Andrade is famously indiscriminate about the uses of his art. It has appeared on book covers, magazine spreads, rock posters, Burning Man paraphernalia, board games, as well as the occasional t-shirt and skateboard. His greatest ambition in life is to project his mental images into the minds of innocent people everywhere.

A few of the places you may have seen Hugh’s art: rock posters for Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, the Avett Brothers and Joan Jett; book covers for Penguin, Houghton-Mifflin, and Harper Collins; illustration annuals from Communication Arts (on the cover!), American Illustration, Creative Quarterly and the Society of Illustrators.

Hugh also likes to hang his art on clean, white gallery walls when he gets a chance.

Mariana Coan – discovering something new

Based is São Paulo, Brazil, Mariana Coan has been working as a professional illustrator for over 4 years now. All that started when she sold her first illustration to Capricho, a magazine very popular among Brazilian teenagers.

I wish I could tell that I was one of those kids who draw since kindergarten, but things were different for me. Of course I’ve always liked to draw, but, born on a really small town on the outskirts of Brazil, I could not imagine I could make a living out of it. So, in college I’ve studied Publishing. At first I thought I was going to spend the rest of my days editing text and copywriting books. But after some years doing that I was really fed up with publishing, and I tried to make some illustrations just for pleasure. Sometime later a friend of mine saw the images and told me they were worth something, and that I should show them to some designers and art directors. So I did. But it was only one year later that I got my first commissioned illustration; I had to wait some time to get things going for me. Since I have started illustrating, though, it became more than a merely job. I can truly say it is the best thing that happened to me, I love what I do! 😀

I don’t think I have a particular style, but I can say I like collage and drawing the most. On the last couple of years I started paper crafting, and soon I became more and more in love with that. If I had to define my style, I would say I like mixing techniques, mediums and everything else.

My inspiration and goal is discovering something new in every project – I mean, learning how to do something differently, even if it’s something really tiny. And, of course, there are a bunch of people I admire out there, and they inspire me also. Just to name a few: Fabiano Silva, Robert Weaver, Andy Potts, Benja Harney, Robert Sabuda, Pieatari Posti, and few more.

As a personal thought – even though it’s more universal than personal hehehe: do what you love, and love what you do! 😀

Composition of Mammals by Wataru Yoshida

An interesting blend of photography and illustration by Wataru Yoshida. The artwork comprises of human/animal anatomy sketches that are superimposed on photographs, looking into complexities and intricate structure of mammal’s body. Wataru Yoshida born in Tokyo, Japan in 1987 and has recently graduated from Tama Art University.

I’m searching for job in Japan. And I hope to go to abroad to study graphic design.

Anatomy of Mammals is Wataru’s graduation project and semi-finalist in Adobe Design Achievement Awards 2011 under photography. He was a finalist in 2010 in the same award for illustration.

Eily’s sinister treasures

Eily O Connell is a contemporary and edgy jeweller based in Co. Waterford, Ireland. She has developed a unique selection of eerie, organic jewellery. Various gem inclusions mixed with this raw flavor appeal to those seeking the unusual. She creates eerie assemblages from an array of natural materials, which often grasp various objects or have enamel inclusions. These appear as replications of familiar organic forms, yet are not quite as they appear as she manipulates each one.

Eily’s sinister treasures got her noticed from her graduation, where she received a first class honors degree. She was awarded ‘Most Promising Student’ before college and shortly after graduating; she won ‘Undergraduate 2008’ from the Crafts Council of Ireland. She also received ‘First Prize for Precious Jewellery’ From the Royal Dublin Society in 2009 and has created quite a stir exhibiting all over the world.

Referencing the disruption of nature’s order through my work, I create new life forms that appear as direct replications of recognizable organic matter yet they are not quite as they seem. Having accumulated an assortment of natural forms and materials based on their intrinsic characters, the process of casting helps me to amalgamate these ever evolving hybrids, deceptively leading to mistaken identity.

By acting as the divine creator, I am mimicking the power we have to alter nature’s path, which ultimately leads to chaos and the sinister presence lurking throughout the work.

An intriguing synthesis of art, design and typography by Robert Rebotti

Here comes incredibly inspiring mixed media artwork by Capri, Italy based artist, illustrator and graphic designer Robert Rebotti. His richly colored work with an intriguing synthesis of art, design and typography has appeared in many publications and exhibitions across Europe and North America. Robert also writes graphic and visual design articles for magazines besides teaching visual communication at a school in Capri.
