Kate D. MacDowell sculpting nature’s love

Casualty

From teaching high school students to producing websites for hi-tech companies, and from meditation retreat in rural India to getting inspiration from Italian Renaissance, Kate D. MacDowell eventually settled on creating ceramic masterpieces.

Kate’s hand-built porcelain sculptures are in part responses to environmental threats and their consequences, revealing the rifts and frictions in the union between man and nature. They also borrow from myth, art history, figures of speech and other cultural touchstones. Her work has been shown throughout the US, and in Japan, the U.K. and Europe and in the Art Amsterdam, Art Hamptons, and NEXT Chicago contemporary art fairs.

She won several national clay awards in 2008 and 2009 including Best of Show for Feats of Clay, the NICHE awards (Hand built Ceramics), an Award of Excellence for CraftForms , first prize for Viewpoint: Ceramics , and first prize for Clay? II . In 2007 she was given full funding summer scholarships to the Penland School for Crafts and the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. Her images have been published in 500 Ceramic Sculptures, the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Calle20 (Spain), O.K. Periodicals (Netherlands), Creative Review (UK), Ceramics Monthly, and Hi-Fructose and online at notcot.org, formfiftyfive.com, abduzeedo.com, treehugger.com, juxtapoz.com, beautifuldecay.com, and many other sites. She recently exhibited in the NCECA Invitational exhibition “Earth Matters” in Philadelphia in spring 2010.

Marriage of art and social activism

Birds of Paradise - Ashley Cecil 2009

Ashley Cecil’s been creating art ever since discovering that her mom’s favorite lipstick made a great oil pastel. Things fast forward and we see the artist evolving in to a ‘Painting Activist’. The secret of Ashley Cecil’s brilliant work is in addressing social issues through art.

Much like a photojournalist, I photograph events, scenes and people of interest, and then translate those images into illustrative paintings. My talent is as an artist, my passion is advocating for social change; this is how the two work together.

When asked how she would describe her approach towards her subjects, she said:

Specifically in regards to how I approach my work: I was formally educated in art at the University of Dayton (03), but didn’t really begin to grow into my own style until after graduation. This is when I began to shift my subject matter from landscapes and anything that was simply aesthetically pleasing to things that addressed social issues. I launched the Painting Activist in 2006 and have generally stuck with that theme ever since. Meshing this subject matter with my painting gave me a new and motivating reason to paint.

I just moved to London England with my fiancé and am loving the visual inspiration of this city. The website and my work may take a new turn, but I’m sure the fundamental elements of what has worked for the past 4 years will continue.

Buffet Script is based on fantastic calligraphy by Alf Becker. Designers: Alf Becker, Alejandro Paul.

Buffet Script by Alejandro Paul is based on Alf Becker's calligraphy from 1940's.

Latin American graphic design, illustration and typography have its own style and flavor. Myfonts.com recently interviewed Alejandro Paul, a Buenos Aires (Argentina) based type designer who setup Sudtipos foundry with three other associates. Read the interesting interview here. It is always great to see who is behind some of the loveliest fonts that we work with.

Meet the Kluge letterpress

Under - Art, Design, Media, Technology

Letterpress is a specialised and over five centuries old form of printing. It is also one of the inspirational elements behind this blog design. Fiction produced a small interesting video on this.

Meet Nick Sambrato. He runs a print shop in Orlando, Florida called Mama’s Sauce. A 2,000 pound, cast iron, electric powered monstrosity of vacillating rods, giant spinning wheels and pneumatic hoses.

Let Nick take you on a trip back in time as he runs through the process of turning an ordinary piece of paper stock into work of art.
