Richard Mosse and a desire to rewrite traumatic cultural histories

Under - Art, Inspiration, Media, Photography

Undoubtedly, some of the best short-films I’ve seen lately came from Richard Mosse. Born and grew up in Ireland he is now based in New York. Mosse studied at Yale, Goldsmiths and the London Consortium. He is driven by an ambivalence toward photography and a desire to revisit and even rewrite traumatic cultural histories.

Cast Lead

Shot in the ruins of Gaza and the West Bank, August 2009. Cast Lead, the IDF codename for the Gaza war of 2009, is a term derived from Haim Nachman Bialik’s Hannukah poem about a game played with a spinning dreidel made of lead.

Cinematography and Editing by Trevor Tweeten. Colorist and Post Production by Jerome Thelia.

Souffleur

In an article written several years ago, Robert Fisk referred to the wreck of a Nazi-allied Vichy French U-Boat which lies beneath the waves off the coast of Beirut. The submarine was called Le Souffleur, and was sunk in 1941 by British destroyers which had followed it up the coast from Palestine.

Souffleur was made in sixteen hours as part of the 98 weeks workshop, Beirut, September 2008.

Theatre of War

Shot in Saddam Hussein’s hilltop palace in the mountains overlooking the River Tigris, Theatre of War is a slow, virtually static video piece redolent of classical history painting. Audio was recorded at the official US military hand-over ceremony at the nearby city of Saniya. A mullah’s prayer for unity among Arabs is spoken, after which the pan-Arab national anthem, Mawtini (My Homeland) is played, emphasizing Arab national solidarity and a pan-Arab territory. Made in Iraq in March 2009.

Cinematography and Editing by Trevor Tweeten. Digital Color and Post Production by Jerome Thelia.

Egypt and Lebanon Montage

Under - Art, Inspiration, Media, Photography

Egypt and Lebanon montage by Khalid Mohtaseb.

This is a montage of footage a few friends and I shot for a Documentary during the summer/fall of 2009.

The documentary was shot entirely on the canon 5D MKll in and around Cairo and Beirut. Big ups to Magic Lanterns Firmware update, as well as the Kessler Pocket Dolly for being a huge help in making this happen.

Idiot with a Tripod

Under - Art, Inspiration, Media, Photography

An extraordinary film by Jamie Stuart. Not only is it a wonderful evocation of Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent film “Man With a Movie Camera”, but consider that it was photographed during the blizzard of 2010 (NYC) and edited at lightning speed.

Ok, I know ‘that guy’ now!

Under - Art, Inspiration, Media

It wasn’t that hard to find after all! ‘That guy’ that I first noticed here and mentioned here is Adam Lisagor of Lonelysandwich, and here is an interesting interview with him at the Business Insider.

He is definitely the guy to watch for all the reasons below. Now, since I know who he is, the only question I would want to ask him is where he got ‘those’ glasses from?

Christopher Baker Explores Alaska for Martha Stewart Living

Under - Inspiration, Media, Nature, Photography

Christopher Baker films in Cordova, Alaska to document life around Copper River, one of the last pure watersheds in North America. As overfishing threatens the delicate balance of the eco-system, the state of Alaska and various agencies are working hard to ensure sustainable fishing for future generations.

The story of Cordova is featured in the first digital edition of Martha Stewart Living for the iPad. The “Boundless Beauty” special edition marks the publication’s twentieth anniversary, utilizing the Digital Magazine Suite available on Adobe Labs. Christopher Baker continues his long relationship with Martha Stewart, having worked with her since the Martha Stewart Weddings book in 1987.

Start from the Beginning

Animated short by Berlin based artist Andreas Fischer who is a designer slash artist hybrid machine working with spatial time-based media, generative systems and physical manifestations of digital processes:

The video examines the relationship between the simulated image and its physical manifestation. The landscape appearing in the video references one of Fischer´s relief sculptures.

The sculpture is magnified and distorted by the soundscape created by David. As time progresses the landscape becomes increasingly complex and distorted and finally changes its aggregate state to liquid. The shapes of the polygons appear in contrast to the fluid with which they collide.

The 3d model was textured with photos of the physical sculpture, which was carved from a block of mdf with a cnc-miling machine.

Backyard Booty Segment: Natural Progressions

Under - Inspiration, Media, Nature, Photography

Natural Progressions by Ryan Flett

This impressive video by Ryan Flett basically demonstrates what one can do with a DSLR – provided a creative flare is in place. From video footage to 3D photos and timelapses, everything is shot with Canon 7D and then processed with Photoshop and After Effects.

My segment for KMC’s Backyard Booty in Nelson BC. The segment is about the transition everyone in Kootenays make from Fall into Winter. From the moment the season ends we are waiting for it to return.
